Coach and I teach high school and had a daughter that age, playing volleyball, so we can have a different perspective. I must admit, I'm from the Midwest and old-fashioned and conservative values.
As a man who does not talk about the comfort factor, and as someone who has never played, can not talk seriously about the functionality. From the perspective of shame, both have their strengths and weaknesses. Since the form spandex meeting leaves little imagination, but the shorts in bulk can be much more revealing, if a player rolls and dives. My favorite combination is when a player is done with a comfortable spandex shorts over them. This allows the freedom of movement, but also protects their modesty.
Spandex is really handy. The easy to play and they do not walk in the butt when you get the right size.

Spandex is a great thing for the sport volleyball. While diving for a ball, you could see easily in running shorts, and the burning of the ground is not moving really do not spend nearly as much material with spandex. I know what you're saying, but I see the volleyball players are well used and make yourself very professionally.
